STEMBER, MATHIAS CAPTURE FLEET FEET CAPITOL MILE Local hero Michael Stember and Kristina Mathias of Sunnyvale captured the open titles in the Fourth Annual Fleet Feet Capitol Mile, a 1 mile road race, August 15th in downtown Sacramento, Calif. The race was the road mile championship for the Pacific Association of USA Track & Field and featured a $2,200 prize money purse, attracting more than 300 of the top runners in Northern California and Northern Nevada. The race featured 15 races of males and females, race walking, and running. A beautiful summer morning provided perfect running conditions for the flat, fast, and certified course near the State Capitol. Stember, a prep superstar at nearby Jesuit High School, pulled away from the men's field in the last half mile to win in 4:09.5. Earlier this month, Stember, an All America at Stanford, won the 1500 meter silver medal in the Pan-Am Games. Art Martin of Chico, a distant second in 4:18.7, won the $150 first place prize money as Stember, a junior at Stanford University, is ineligible for the award. Kristina Mathias similarly dominated the women's open race, winning by more than 10 seconds in 5:02.4. Sheri Wright of Superior was second in 5:13.5. Mathias earned $150 for the win. Top runners ages 40 and over were Steve Haas, 41, or Rocklin, 4:29.4, and Linda Gill of San Anselmo, 5:16.0. Age group course records were set by Margarethe Styskel of Murphys, 70, who ran 7:38.9; and men's race walker Rick Holt of Visalia, 7:01.4. The event was sponsored by Fleet Feet Sports of Sacramento and New Balance Athletic Shoe Co. Fleet Feet Capitol Mile Results August 15, 1999 Sacramento, Ca.
