PA/USATF LDR COMMITTEE MEETING

Those present: Tyler Abbott, men's LDR chair Hoy's Excelsior; Susan Beck,
women's LDR chair, Hoy's Excelsior; Irene Herman, PA Membership Committee

Meeting called to order at 11:45 a.m.
 
Minutes from Humboldt meeting approved.
 
ULTRA SUBCOMMITTEE REPORT from Hollis Lenderking
2003 Ultra Grand Prix Schedule submitted and unanimously approved.
Current prize money posted on web site will be corrected
Headlands 50K (August) will be the 2003 USATF National 50K
Championship as it was in 2002.
PA athlete Alex Tilson achieved a national 50K record of
2:51:48 at a 50K event held on the Stanford campus Nov. 2, 2002.
 
VOLUNTEERS
Need a Men's XC Subcommittee Chair
Dan Preston agreed to be a Men's LDR Board of Athletics Rep
Need two more LDR Board of Athletics Reps
 
LDR BANQUET
Numbers of attendees down; suggested that more and earlier publicity
would help
 
2003 ROAD GP SCHEDULE
Fleet Feet Mile: date of July 13 "almost definite."
NorCal John Frank Mem. 10M: hotel list and information about
pasta feed was distributed; RD was expected to attend Officials
Clinic.
Cal 10: LDR committee decided to recommend to RD to keep the 
date as the
second Sunday in January, at least for 2004 (due to new 10 miler and lack
of late 2003 marathon).
Heritage Oaks Banks 10K will be the National USATF Masters
Team & Individual 2003 Championship; $20,000 in prize money; double
dipping OK.
Galena 5K pulled out of the schedule but is considering
bidding for 2004.
 
SCORING CHANGES
o Point Weighting Of Races
Task force debated three options: a) limit weighting of
races to 3 points; b) leave everything the same; c) that the highest
point race never be higher than one point over the next highest race.
The task force recommends (c). Will be voted on at the next meeting.
o Point Weighting for Individuals
Motion to change point weighting structure of older age division
competitors tabled unanimously.
Motion to allow individuals to score on teams in more than one age
division at a given race postponed indefinitely.
 
LDR GUIDELINE CHANGE
Approved with one abstention to add New Section 23: that
amendments to the LDR Guidelines can be made at one meeting and then
voted on at the next meeting with the date of amendment enactment to
be determined by the content of the amendment.
 
TRAVEL FUNDS FOR 2003 ON ROADS
o Short Distance Division Men: Unanimously approved that $250 be
granted to the top finisher at the Heritage Oaks Bank 10K for travel
to the Senior Bowl 10K (Alabama). Awardee must have run at least one other
grand prix race before the Heritage Oaks Bank 10K.
o Short Distance Division Women: Unanimously approved that $250 be
granted to the top finisher at the Jamba Juice 5K for travel to the Tufts
10K in Boston. Awardee must have run at least one other grand prix race
before the Jamba Juice 5K.
o Men's and Women's Long Division: Unanimously passed that travel
funds to assist with travel to the Olympic Marathon Trials be granted
to the men ($250 divided among them)/women ($250 divided among them)
who run a Marathon Trials qualifying time in 2003.
 
CALIFORNIA TRACK & RUNNING NEWS TOP PERFORMANCES AWARDS
$250 each granted to Peter Gilmore (Cal 10 '02) and to
Magdalena Lewy (Humboldt Half '02), assuming funding can be found.
 
DECLINED PRIZE MONEY TREATMENT
Unanimously passed to include in Grand Prix bid contract that
prize money declined by a top finisher goes to the next finisher.
Passed with one abstention to include in Grand Prix bid
contract that any unclaimed prize money will be returned to the race
director (in the case where there are fewer competing individuals or teams
in the specific age division than there are money spots).
 
SPONSORSHIP GUIDELINES
Unanimously passed that the LDR Chairs and the LDR Communications
Committee members investigate the possibility of web sponsorship and
develop a pricing structure, etc.
 
NEW BUSINESS
A motion was made that the 24 hour official protest period starts after
the official results are posted on the PA Web site. Approved unanimously.
 
A motion was made that the PA increase the Road complimentary entries for
super seniors from 1 to 3. The motion was withdrawn and the proposal will
be discussed at the next meeting.
 
A motion was made that an exception be made to award complimentary entries
to Suzanne Franco, who finished third in the super senior road grand prix.
Both finishers ahead of Ms. Franco qualified for complimentary entries as
seniors. The motion was defeated 0-9, with 3 abstentions.
 
A suggestion was made that top super seniors who are not comped get a
discount on race entries, but that discussion was postponed for
another meeting.
