FORBES, SHELDON POST CAREER-BESTS AT UC MULTI-MEET
DAVIS, Calif. -- UC Davis senior Ben Forbes scored a career-high 7,080 points in the 
decathlon event at the UC Multi-Meet on a windy Thursday and finished third, while 
junior Caroline Sheldon tallied a personal-best 4,736 in the heptathlon, highlighting 
he Aggies' action at Woody Wilson Track.

Andy Geisler, representing Oakley, won the top flight of the decathlon with 7,601 points, 
beating Darion Powell of Washingon State who was second with 7,243. Forbes finished third, 
becoming just the third Aggie ever to eclipse the 7,000-point barrier. The mark also 
automatically qualified him for the NCAA Division II Championships in May.
"The barrier has been broken," said UC Davis men's coach Jon Vochatzer. "Scoring 7,000 
points is such a mental barrier. Ben made a quantum leap. I think his focus and the level 
of competition got him over 7,000." 
   
Washington State's Ellannee Richardson won the top flight of the heptathlon, scoring 5,701 
points. Unattached athlete Missy Vanek was second with 5,604 and Diana Pickler of 
Washington State was third with 5,120. Sheldon's 4.736 points surpassed her previous 
career-high of 4,611 which she earned at the Chico Multi-Meet earlier this month. She 
finished 10th on Thursday and improved her provisional mark for the national championships.
"Caroline really wants to go to nationals," Vochatzer said. "There's a sense of urgency 
and she really wants to do it." 

Andrew Phillips of UCLA scored 6,485 points to win the second flight of decathletes, while 
UC Irvine's Ann Marie Turpin won the heptathlon's second flight with 4,601 points. The 
Aggies' Matt Chisam scored 6,115 points in top flight of the decathlon before bowing out 
of the competition after the javelin, while teammate Mike Comaroto had 4,325 points in the 
second flight before stopping after seven events. Forbes, who began the day with 3,767 
points, started his day strong by scoring 879 points in the 110-meter high hurdles after 
finishing third overall in 14.92 seconds. He was second in the discus throw at 131 feet, 
3 inches for 665 points, went 13-1.5 in the pole vault for 617 more, then tallied 576 
points after an effort of 161-3 in the javelin. Forbes concluded his day in strong fashion 
by finishing second in the 1,500 at 4:53.71. Sheldon started Thursday with 2,899 points, 
adding 587 in the long jump after going 16-8.75. She threw the javelin 106-2 for 521 more 
points and then finished the 800 in 2:27.18 for 729 points. Chisam's best marks on the 
final day of competition came in the 110 high hurdles where he was timed in 15.28 for 
816 points, and in the pole vault where he took second at 15-1, scoring 790 points.
The top two finishers of each flight received the awards from Olympian Dan O'Brien, who 
was at the meet as a volunteer coach for Washington State.

The remainder of the UC Davis track and field team will be in action on Saturday. The 
middle distance and distance runners will travel to the Stanford Invitational on Friday 
and Saturday, while the rest of the squad travels over the Causeway for the Sacramento 
State Invitational.
