PACIFIC ASSOCIATION/UNITED STATES OF AMERICA TRACK & FIELD
BIG CHANGE – THE REGION 14 (QUALIFYING MEET FOR THE NATIONAL JUNIOR OLYMPICS) WILL BE ON SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 28th. THAT IS ON THE THANKSGIVING WEEKEND AND THE DAY AFTER THE CALIFORNIA STATE HIGH SCHOOL CHAMPIONSHIPS. ALL HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETES WILL BE ABLE TO COMPETE, AND SCORE, FOR THEIR CLUB.
At our meeting it was suggested that the National Junior Olympics no longer be held at high-altitude locations. Some of our coaches felt that athletes living and training at low-altitude have a disadvantage when competing at high-altitude against athletes living and training at high-altitude. This suggestion was presented to the National Youth Chairman at our Region 14 Track and Field Championships on July 10th. The answer was simple; when the annual vote takes place be sure to vote for a low-altitude location. For your information – at the National USATF Convention this November/December there will be three bids to host the 2006 Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships; Salt Lake City, Spokane and Reno.
We will be hosting ten (10) meets, between September25th and November 28th, before the National Junior Olympic. We will have a scoring system at eight (8) of those meets for boys and girls in the Bantam, Midget and Youth age groups. At each meet, if you come in 1st in your age group you will receive 1 point, 2nd =2, 3rd =3, etc. For every meet that you do not compete in you will get one point more than the last place finisher receives. At our November 21st PA/JO Championships the athletes who have scored the least number of points in each age group will be presented with a trophy and a whole lot of recognition. The athletes who have scored the 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 5th least points will receive a letter of accomplishment and recognition.
We would like to have as many of our athletes and clubs take part in all of our meets. It supports the clubs that host the meets and it makes our athletes better in competition. The more the athletes, the better the competition. And the better the competition, the better the athletes will be.
Not all athletes in your club are good sprinters or good throwers or good jumpers. Some of them could be good distance runners. If you are not involved in cross country give it a try! The coaching is a lot easier than track and field as there is only one event! Or, if your club is not involved in cross country, your athletes may legally take part in cross country with another club.
