Minister's Message

Happy New Year and welcome to the second edition of the Sydney 2009 World Masters Games newsletter.

It is wonderful that this major event targeting 30,000 participants, including 12,000 from overseas and 8,000 from interstate, will be happening right here in Sydney.

This will be the biggest mass participation multi sport event in the world. There will be nearly 30 events based around Western Sydney with the hub of the activity taking part at Sydney Olympic Park, home of the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.

Games participants will have the opportunity to take advantage of Sydney's Olympic legacy with many of the sports to be played at the fabulous venues used in 2000.

The NSW Government proudly supports this event and with the expert guidance of a Games Advisory Committee made up of some of the Olympic movement's most recognised administrators, we are fully committed to delivering the best World Masters Games ever.

That is not to mention all the wonderful experiences Sydney will offer competitors who take some extra time to take a look around our sparkling city.

NSW welcomes the opportunity to play host to those who have committed to a lifetime participation in sport - more people, more active, more often.

It's definitely an event not to be missed and I hope to see you here in 2009.

The Hon. Sandra Nori
NSW Minister for Tourism and Sport and Recreation,
Minister for Women and
Minister Assisting the Minister for State Development

Update from the Chair

Theres certainly been a lot going on since our last newsletter in October 2006 as we step up preparations for the worlds biggest multi-sport event.

The hard-working team at our organising committee have been on the promotional trail spreading the word about the Sydney 2009 World Masters Games, speaking to thousands of participants at the Alice Springs Masters Games, one of Australias more significant masters events and the Pan Pacific Masters Games held on the Gold Coast.

Our team continued to grow with three key senior management appointments: Matthew Phelan, Group Manager Sport and Competition; Peter Bowen, Group Manager Finance and Administration; and Graeme Moses, Group Manager Marketing, Sales and Communications.

We kicked off the new year on a positive note with the appointment of our Chief Executive Officer, Shane OLeary. Shane joined our team as Chief Operating Officer in August 2005 and has done an outstanding job. He brings a wealth of experience in sports management and masters sport to the role and I look forward to working with him and his team to deliver the best ever World Masters Games.

Some other exciting changes are also taking place in the early part of the year as we prepare to launch a new logo and a new look. So stay tuned for the next edition of the newsletter to see the changes unveiled.

Margy Osmond
Chair
Sydney 2009 World Masters Games Advisory Committee

Sports Update

We have now secured more than 90% of the competition venues for the 2009 games with a number of the sports to be played at venues used for the highly successful Sydney 2000 Olympics.

We are looking at establishing sporting hubs, where more than one sport will be played and accommodation and other facilities are available, around key venues including Sydney Olympic Park, Blacktown, Penrith and Bankstown.

We are also working very closely with the NSW State Sports Associations to determine competition details for each of the sports on the program and are expecting to have sport-specific information on our website in the second half of 2007. We will keep you up to date as more information comes to hand.

On the road again

We will be hitting the road again early in 2007 as part of a promotional and fact-finding mission. Our first port of call is the New Zealand Masters Games to be held in Wanganui from February 10 to February 18. Organisers are expecting 8,000 participants to flock to the North Island town for another week of magic Masters competition. We look forward to seeing some familiar faces from the previous event held in Dunedin in 2006 and hope to see you all in Sydney in 2009.

And with barely a chance to unpack our bags, we are off to the World Police & Fire Games in Adelaide. The event runs from March 16 to March 25 with thousands of international police officers, fire fighters and corrective services officers taking part in aged based competition. Many of these participants will be eligible for the Sydney 2009 World Masters Games so keep up the training!
