Linda Somers Smith Sets a 45-49 American Record at the 2008 U.S. Women's Olympic Marathon Trials

At the U.S. Olympic Team Trials-Women's Marathon on April 20, Linda
Somers Smith (Arroyo Grande, Calif.) set an American record for the
45-49 age group. Her finishing time of 2:38:49 topped Joan Benoit
Samuelson's currently listed record of 2:42:28. Somers Smith, who was a
U.S. Olympic marathoner in 1996, completed her fourth Trials with a
top-20 finish (17th place).

Somers Smith and Benoit Samuelson both qualified for all six Women's
Olympic Marathon Trials, the first of which was held in 1984. Samuelson,
50, finished this year's Trials in 2:49:08, reaching her goal of
sub-2:50 in a race she said was her last competitive marathon.
