Five PA Athletes in Contention for USATF Youth Athlete of the Year!

2008 Youth Athlete of the Year
Christine Babcock (past PA Junior Olympic competitor) - Woodbridge, Calif.

  • Won the California state title and set a national high school federation record of 4:33.82 in the 1,600m.
  • Set the national prep record in the 1,500, running 4:16.42 to break Kim Gallagher's 26-year-old patemplate2007record. It also qualified her for the Olympic Trials.
  • Qualified and competed at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Track & Field. Finished seventh in the opening round (4:18.32).


German Fernandez (unattached) - Riverbank, Calif.

  • Won the USA Junior Cross Country Championships.
  • Was the highest placing American in the men's junior race at the IAAF World XC Championships, finishing 25th.
  • Broke the 29-year old national prep record for the 2-mile race with a time of 8:34.40.


Jordan Hasay (San Luis Distance Club) <http://www.pausatf.org/data/clubs.php?club_no=126> - Arroyo Grande, Calif.

  • Won the USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships (1500m: 4:18.44) and USA Junior Cross Country Championships.
  • Qualified and competed at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Track & Field. Finished 10th in the 1,500m final in 4:17.36. In the semifinal round broke the national prep record running 4:14.50 by almost 2 seconds.
  • Took fourth place in the women's 1,500m final at the IAAF World Junior Championships in 4:19.02.


Tyler Sorensen (Pleasanton Heat) <http://www.pausatf.org/data/clubs.php?club_no=28> - Lafayette, Calif.

  • Set the U.S. Youth record while claiming National Junior Olympic Championship title in the youth division (3000m Race Walk: 13:42.07).
  • Finished 8th at the National Junior Olympic Championships in the youth division (3000m Race Walk: 9:40.41).

  • Set the U.S. Youth record while claiming National Junior Olympic Championship title in the youth division (100m Hurdles: 13.85).
  • Finished 3rd at the National Junior Olympic Championships in the youth division (100m: 12.12).
