San Jose’s Age 9-10 Boys 4x100M Relay Team Places Second at Hershey’s


umoja tc 9-10 boys relay teamHERSEY, PA (August 2, 2008) – The North American Final of the Hershey’s Track & Field Games was held today, approximately 560 youth athletes participated.  From April through July, boys and girls ages nine through 14 competed in local, district, state and provincial meets. At least five participants from each state and 10 Canadian provinces and three territories then traveled to Hershey, PA to compete in the North American Final.  The San Jose’s age 9 -10 boys 4x100M relay team consisting of Oscar James, Akil Jones, Mikel Mathews, and Morian Walker won both the San Jose city and Northern California state titles to qualify for the North American Final.  At the 2008 North American Final the team finished a strong second.  Johnita Lux, mom of Akil Jones, said, “The boys had a blast!” 

 

All members of San Jose’s age 9 -10 boys 4x100M relay team are also members of the Umoja Track Club, based in Santa Clara, CA, and guided by Head Coach Brunet Lux.  Other outstanding performances of the relay team included finishing first at the USA Track and Field Association (USATF) Region 14 Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships and finishing seventh USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships.  The Umoja Track Club, a non-profit organization, was established in 2000 to provide a supervised after school program of training and competition in Track and Field for children ages 6 to 18.  The Umoja Track Club has been a Pacific Association member of the USATF for eight years.  It is the goal of the Umoja Track Club to provide a meaningful learning and character-building environment to promote self-esteem, personal commitment, responsibility, and respect for others.  Furthermore, the Umoja Track Club has a strong commitment to getting kids more physically active; to getting kids involved in the teamwork of sport; and to having real, positive and measurable impact.  For more information about the Umoja Track Club, visit our Web site at www.umojatrackclub.com.
