San Francisco-based running team aims to qualify for the Women’s Marathon 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials

San Francisco, CA – September 28, 2009 -  The San Francisco-based Impala Racing Team, one of the country’s top all-women running teams, will send 12 athletes to run in the USA Women’s and Master’s Marathon Championships on Sunday, October 4, 2009.  This race will also be the first and only day in 2009 for women to qualify for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials with a 2:46:00 or better. The championship events are part of the 28th annual Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon, which starts in downtown Minneapolis and finishes in front of the State Capitol in St. Paul.

The 12 women - Megan Daly, Emily Bates, Chris Lundy, Lisbet Sunshine, Brooke Wells, Janet Cain, Ashley Carroll, Michelle Flenniken, Ashley Grosse, Pamela Kennedy, Jaymee Marty, Laura Meadors - all live and work in the Bay Area and take advantage of the region’s world-class running terrains such as the Presidio, Golden Gate Park, Sawyer Camp Trail in San Mateo and Mount Tamalpais. The runners have been averaging 65-100 miles a week in preparation for the upcoming race.

“These women have dedicated themselves to being fully prepared to compete in a national championship against the best marathoners in the country,” said Tony Coffey, Coach of the Impala Racing Team. “They have done so while balancing the demanding responsibilities of work and family. They have the support of the entire Impala team behind them.”

“The Impalas are more than a running team; over the last 30 years, deep friendships have been forged through the common bond of training and racing,” said Karen Ribble, President of the Impala Racing Team. “We support and push each other to perform at the highest possible level.”

With more than 150 members ranging in age from 22-70, the Impala Racing Team has been a fixture on the Bay Area running scene for 30 years and trains on Tuesday nights at Kezar Stadium in Golden Gate Park.   Sponsored by Nike and PowerBar, the Impalas have won numerous local and national team championships, including the Pacific Association Grand Prix, the Masters Cross Country Nationals, Boston Marathon, National Masters Marathon and Freihofers 5k.
