Sufur Deposition Updates

Updated August 28, 2006

Sulfur Depostion Web Page

The new web page for sulfur deposition was developed in order to keep company employees informed on the latest information regarding this problem. This page will also contain useful information on parts and equipment which can help alleviate the problem. Histories of affected sites provide an overview of the problems and progress made by other areas of the company. Everyone's input is needed and greatly appreciated in keeping this site up to date and useful to others.  Please use the form below to communicate any status updates you may have regarding sulfur deposition. Also, feel free to contact us by email or phone under the Contacts section at the bottom of this page.

GPSRC Research Funding Sought
Bob Becken is submitting a proposal to ASME's Gas Pipeline Safety Research Committe (GPSRC) to fund a project to explore the causes of sulfur deposition. He is looking for any and all supporting evidence of the causes and solutions to this problem. The issue is a world-wide problem, not just limited to PG&E or US Utilities.

Other Utilities
pre-2001 SoCal Gas May Lew SoCal Gas has had a long history of sulfur deposition problems throughout its system. They have made great use of the Sulfagon filters (mostly the larger F-5ST) at dozens of sites.
Questar (Salt Lake City, UT) Brian Niebergall No problems in 2001 (50-50 blend THT-TBM)
2001 est Avista (Spokane, WA) Jenny Blaylock Three to four station out of dozens experience sulfur problems. It appears to be seasonal.
Pilot heaters were placed on these stations with some success, but still some sulfur persists.
Increased inspections for problem regs.
Southwest Gas Steve Frehs Problems in Victorville area. 50-50 blend of THT/TBM since 1993..
Excel Energy Rosemarie Halchuk

Effects of Heating Gas on Sulfur Deposition

Sulfur deposition generally occurs when there is a large pressure cut. Temperatures drops of approximately 7oF per 100 psi are associated with these pressure drops. As the temperatures dropse gas drops the sulfur equilibrium concentration will also drop (see Figure 7). The "holding ability" of the gas is reduced and at low enough temperatures, the sulfur will drop out of solution.

To prevent or reduce this dropping out of sulfur, the gas can be preheated before it is regulated down. Figure 8 shows how this heating can avoid or minimize sulfur drop out.
