USATF NATIONAL CLUB CHAMPS AT SFSU, JULY 9-10; TEAMS HDQTR ON PENINSULA
The National Club Championships of USA Track & Field will be held in the Bay Area for the first time, on Friday and Saturday (July 9-10) at San Francisco State University.
The Tenth Annual USATF Club meet, similar to the USATF Outdoor Championships two weeks ago in Des Moines, is limited to registered USATF club team members only and will therefore add relay competition. More than 500 athletes are expected to compete for $10,000 in team prize money. In addition, local Pacific Association area athletes will conclude their season-long $15,000 Grand Prix competition at the championships. Therefore more than $25,000 in total prize money is at stake.
SCHEDULE: Competition begins on Friday at noon and admission is free. Friday competition concludes with the men’s 10,000 meters and women’s high jump, at 6:30 p.m., followed by women’s and men’s 5,000 meter race walks.
Saturday competition begins at 10 a.m. with the men’s pole vault and javelin throw. The meet wraps up with three hours of relay races, from 4-7p.m. with events ranging from the 4 x 100 meters to the distance medley.
There will be a vendor area with USATF exhibits and food booths.
Team awards will be presented to the top three men’s and women’s teams and an overall men’s and women’s combined team champion will also be crowned. Team prize money: First place men’s and women’s teams each receive $2,000; second place $1,500; third place $1,000, and fourth place $500.
Last year’s championships were held at Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island, New York site of the recent international Diamond League adidas Diamond League meet. The USATF Club Championships have been conducted annually since 2001.
USATF is staging the 2010 here in partnership with its Pacific Association (Northern California and Northern Nevada) and SFSU -- with PA President Irene Herman of San Francisco heading the local organizing committee.
PENINSULA HEADQUARTERS: Athletes are utilizing Peninsula Hotels, in cooperation with the San Mateo County Convention and Visitors Bureau. The Westin and Clarion Hotels in Millbrae are serving as meet headquarters.
