Olympic discus gold medalist Stephanie Brown Trafton and American record holder Suzy Powell-Roos are entered in a battle featuring three of the world’s current top ten women’s throwers at  Sunday’s (May 29) USA Track & Field Pacific Association Championships at College of San Mateo.

Also, javelin thrower Kim Kreiner is slated to return to the site of her 2006 American Record toss of 203 feet, 10 inches.  She has represented the USA in the last two Olympics.

Together the trio have made seven Olympic appearances this century – and are prepping for this summer’s World Championships in Korea en route to the 2012 London Olympics.

Competition Sunday begins at 9 a.m. with the 10,000 meter races.  Discus competition for men is scheduled for 12 noon, followed by the women’s throw.  Men’s javelin will be at 2 p.m., followed by the women’s competition

There is no admission charge to watch these Olympians and other top athletes from the region perform on Memorial Day weekend – and compete for $15,000 in Pacific Association Grand Prix prize money.

THREE OF CURRENT WORLD TOP TEN ENTERED IN DISCUS THROW:

Added to the mix for Sunday’s discus competition is the newest member of the all-time US top ten, Gia Lewis Smallwood, 32, who had the second longest throw among all Americans last season, 205-10 – becoming  only the 20th American to surpass 200 feet.  The Illinois native also was second at the national championships.

Modesto’s Powell-Roos, 34, set the American Record of 222 feet in 2007 and competed in her third Olympic Games in 2008.

Brown Trafton, 31, won the Beijing Olympics on her first throw, 212-5, becoming the first American to take gold in the event since 1932.  She finished the season ranked No. 1 in the world.

The San Luis Obispo native, who now lives in Galt (near Sacramento), set her personal best of 217-2, at the 2009 PA meet at CSM.   That mark led the world at that point of the season.  She also won the 2009 USA championship.

Brown Trafton is the current American leader at 210-4.  Powell Ross ranks No. 4 (207-7) and Lewis-Smallwood No. 5 (204-3).  All three are in the current WORLD top ten.

USA masters long jump (age 45-49) record holder Joy Upshaw Margerum  will compete in that event and the sprints as a tune-up for July’s World masters championships in Sacramento.

POWELL FOOTNOTE: NEXT GEN OF FAMILY STAR AT CC CHAMPS:

Suzy Powell’s brother has twin daughters who made their mark at the California Community College Athletic Association Championships, May 20-21.  Jaci and Juli Powell scored 20 of Golden West College’s 27 points in the two-day meet at American River College in Sacramento.

Jaci alone tallied 18 points, winning the heptathlon by more than 200 points (4,796 total), placing fourth in the javelin throw (personal best 124-8) and sixth in the long jump (17-10 3/4).  She had a better jump the second day, in the heptathlon, 18-3 3/4, and ranks third  in the state for the season at 18-10 1/2.

Juli placed seventh in the pole vault at 10-6.  Both are just freshmen.

Be on the lookout for a true family gathering at a future track championship.
