NARI – Give a Book Program
While the numbers of elite race walkers in America has dwindled for some time, a spotlight was placed on the problem at our recent 50K National Championships where only three competitors finished the race. While there are a great many factors that contributed to this light turnout, there is no question that we need to rebuild race walking in the United States if our sport is to continue.
Currently, there are many efforts throughout the country to try to revive race walking. Racewalk.com would like to help, so we’ve teamed up with NARI (North American Race Walking Institute) to help provide learning materials for youth and high school programs. In the past racewalk.com donated hundreds of “Walk Like an Athlete” books and a number of video sets to be distributed to coaches and athletes by NARI.
Now we are asking your help. The “Give a Book Program” is designed to help NARI fund and distribute additional books to coaches and young race walkers throughout the United States. Initially, our goal is to raise money to distribute 200 books between Maine, Texas and California. We picked these areas as they are areas where youth race walking is showing promise.
We ask that you make a donation so that books can be purchased at 1⁄2 the cover price and given to those who have the biggest impact on our sport; those coaching and learning it. Racewalk.com is making the books available at a considerable discount. For a tax deductible donation of $12, you can put a book (Race Walk Like a Champion, Full Color Edition) in the hands of a potential future Olympian. For $24, you double the chances. Please donate whatever you can to this worthy cause and help us turn the tide on our decreasing numbers.
Thanks,
Jeff Salvage

Tyler Sorenson Sets 15 km Junior National Race Walk Record!
The Pacific Association is excited to announce our own Tyler Sorenson, 15 year old with Pleasanton Heat broke the USA Junior National Record for a 15K road race walk on May 17, 2009 at the Fairmount Park in Riverside, CA; winning the USATF West Region 15K Race Walk Championship. Tyler used this race to help him prepare for the upcoming Junior National Championship in Eugene, OR next month.
His time of 1:12:57 broke the old record for 15 to 19 year olds set back in June 2004 by Troy Clark of the Maine Race Walkers. His record will be submitted for approval at the USATF Annual Meeting in Indianapolis in December. Tyler set the National Youth Boy record for 3000m at last year’s National Junior Olympics. Keep an eye on this young man as he continues his quest to be one of the top junior racewalkers in the country.
Respectfully Submitted,
Becky Klein

2008 USATF Youth Race Walk Honor Roll
The USA Track & Field Race Walk committee annually honors the top young
race walkers in America. The following athletes were judged the best in
each of their age groups by a panel of elite athletes and coaches at the
USATF National Convention in Reno. The criteria used to evaluate their
performances was the athletes times and places in major competitions,
including the USATF Junior Olympic T&F Nationals, USATF Youth Athletics
T&F Nationals, USATF T&F Junior Nationals, USA World RW Cup Trials and
the events of the USATF Race Walk Junior Grand Prix Circuit.
The committee elected to select 4 athletes in two divisions this year
because of the inseparable accomplishments of the athletes involved. In
the Bantam girls division Erin Jacob’s 3rd place finish in 9:14.83 at
the USATF Junior Olympic nationals wasn’t a significant advantage over
Cherylen Chavez’s 9:14.98, to warrant either being left off the honor
role. And in the Intermediate division the voting ended in a tie for the
third position.
As we have done in the past, all athletes recognized will receive a
Certificate, RW patch, and a T-shirt from the Race Walk committee
commemorating and congratulating them on their achievements.
A big thanks to RW Committee Secretary Ginger Mulanax and Maryanne
Daniel, chair of the Women’s Development, for all of the work they did
in making this happen.
