2018 Pride Track and Field Meet

Chabot College, Hayward, CA July 7, 2018

Record attendance and a pair of American Records highlighted the 2018 Pride Meet at Chabot College in Hayward, CA on Saturday, July 7, 2018. The two American Records capped off outstanding performances throughout the day, as athletes set 10 Pride Meet Records across the sprints, throws and jumps.

Amanda Scotti (W60), Debra Hoffman (W58), Darla Demitrios (W55) and Joy Upshaw (W57) sped to a new pending American Record in the W55 4x100m relay in 55.71 – well under the previous mark of 56.22 set in August of last year. On the field, Elsbeth Padia (W80) celebrated her recent birthday and promotion to the W80-84 age group by setting a new pending American Record in the W80 Shot Put with her throw of 8.43m – which eclipsed the prior mark of 7.69m set back in 2013 by well over 2 feet. Elsbeth also set four Pride Meet records in the Shot Put (2kg), Discus (0.75kg), Javelin (400g), and Hammer (2kg).

Jeff Laynes (M47) sped to a new Pride Meet record of 11.19 in the 100m on a day in which two other athletes – Nathan Gyger (M26) and Chris Garofola (M37) – bested the old mark of 11.25. Laynes, Gyger and Garofola also staged a great battle at 200m as Nathan Gyger (M26) set a new Pride Meet record of 22.65 with Laynes and Garofola close behind at 22.74 and 22.94, respectively. All three were well under the existing meet record of 23.13 set back in 2007. Rod Jett (M51) – already a Pride Meet record holder at 110m Hurdles (14.95) – added a chart-topping performance in the 100m Hurdles as he set a new Pride Meet record of 14.73.

Gary Wuest (M72) highlighted a great day in the field events as he set two Pride Meet records in the throws – 10.81m in the 4kg (M70-79) Shot Put and 35.83m in the 500kg (M70-79) Javelin. George Patterson, Sr. (M80) added another Pride Meet record in the Throws with his 16.61m Javelin toss (400kg, M80+). Finally, Clem DeGiovanni (M21) topped the High Jump competition by matching the existing Pride Meet record of 1.90m.
