       The 10 Minute Resolution

and 1 and 2 and 3 Most of us go through the ritual of making a New Years Resolution but hardly ever act to resolve anything. 365 days is a mighty long time, long enough to lose focus and forget what we resolved to do in the first place. But what if your New Year’s resolution only took 10 minutes? Do you think you would follow through with it? Well here’s an idea that might you and your athletes.

Athletes spend a lot of time in school sitting at a desk all day. Something that can ruin their posture and as a result leave their muscles feeling tight. My suggestion would be to remind them to squeeze a couple stretching breaks into their day to loosen up, relax, gain flexibility and assist in recovery. They’ll move better and reduce the risk of injury as a result.

So start the New Year off right by having them stretch for five minutes twice a day in addition to any stretching they do during their workout.

To get started, try these five stretches (Courtesy of LSI Sprint Track and Field).

Side Lunge Stretch Muscles Stretched: Hips, groin and adductors

Starting Position: Start standing upright, with both feet facing forward, double shoulder-width apart and place your hands on your hips or thighs.

Procedure Keeping your back straight and head in a neutral position, lunge your body to one side, keeping one leg straight. Press your hips down toward the floor.

Coaching Keys Focus, breathe freely and relax the muscle throughout the movement. Stretch until a mild tension is felt. Hold stretch for 15 seconds. Repeat procedure with the opposite leg.

Front Lunge Muscles Stretched: Rectus Femoris, Iliopsoas

Starting Position: Start standing upright, Step forward with the right leg and extend the left leg behind the torso

Procedure Move the hips forward , pushing the right knee infront of the right ankle. Place the hands on the knee or hips to maintain balance.

Coaching Keys Focus, breathe freely and relax the muscle throughout the movement. Stretch until a mild tension is felt. Hold stretch for 15 seconds. Repeat procedure with the opposite leg.

Pigeon Sit Stretch Muscles Stretched: Gluteus Maximus, Gluteus Minimus, Gluteus Medius, Piriformis, IT Band

Starting Position: Start in a push-up position on your hand and toes. Slide your right knee forward toward your right hand. Angle your knee, so the outer ankle is touching the floor (see picture). Slide your left leg back as far as comfortable and keep your hips square to the floor.

Procedure Allow the body to lean forward over the knee resting your forarms on the floor for support. Push hips towards the floor and hold.

Coaching Keys Focus, breathe freely and relax the muscle throughout the movement. Stretch until a mild tension is felt. Hold stretch for 15 seconds. Fold forward and let your forearms rest on the floor in front of you or fully extend your arm in front of you. Repeat procedure with the opposite leg.

Side Lunge Stretch Muscles Stretched: Gluteus Maximus, Erector Spinae

Starting Position: Start lying on your back, bend the right knee and bring it towards the chest while keeping the left leg flat against the floor.

Procedure Keeping your back and left leg flat put both hands behind the knee and pull the knee down to the chest as far as possible.

Coaching Keys Focus, breathe freely and relax the muscle throughout the movement. Stretch until a mild tension is felt. Hold stretch for 15 seconds. Repeat procedure with the opposite leg. Bringing the knee to the armpit will increase the stretch.

Cross Leg Hip Stretch Muscles Stretched: Piriformis

Starting Position: Start by Lying on the floor on your back and cross the right ankle over the left knee. Grip the thigh of your left leg with both hands and pull the knee towards you, lifting the foot off the floor.

Procedure Pull the knee further towards you to increase the stretch.

Coaching Keys Focus, breathe freely and relax the muscle throughout the movement. Stretch until a mild tension is felt. Hold stretch for 15 seconds. Repeat procedure with the opposite leg.

Sydnie Bunel the Bronze Bombshell

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The nation’s top youth track and field competitors headed to Myrtle Beach, SC for the 2011 World Youth Track & Field Trials and the 2011 USA Youth Outdoor Track & Field Championships, June 28- July 3 at Doug Shaw Stadium.

80m hurdles – Sydnie Bunel of LSI Sprint took to Myrtle Beach to battled for supremacy in the midget girls’ 80m hurdles. Windy but not Worried she Qualified in the Prelims with a Time of 13.56 to advance to the finals. In the Finals Sydnie would run a Personal Best of 12.96, good enough take the podium and Bronze Medalist behind Durham Striders teammates Kayla Moore and Kenyae Austin with thier times of 12.86 and 12.87.

“I thought her efforts were good despite some of the challenges she faced this season,” said LSI Head Coach Alexander Hill. “Overall I’m please with the outcome.

We have a saying at LSI “It doesn’t matter what you do now, what matters is what you do when it counts” and to run a Personal Best, the very last race of the season makes it that more time tested and true. Sydnie has a great deal of talent and potential and at 12 years old we have plenty time to extract her best performances.”

Pacific Association would Like to congratulate PA Member, US #9 and National Youth All American Sydnie Bunel for her continued success and improvement in USA Track and Field.

The Youth Championships is a national competition with entry based upon qualifying standards for each event and has the same age divisions as the USATF Junior Olympic Program: Bantam (10 and under), Midget (11-12), Youth (13-14), Intermediate (15-16) and Young Women/Men (17-18). The USA Youth Outdoor Track & Field Championships are also scored for team championships in all age divisions.

PA: LSI! What does those letters stand for?

Coach Hill: LSI Stand for “Learning Speed Intelligently”

Happy New Year one and all. Hope everyone had a most wonderful holiday season. This notice is a friendly reminder of the second of our two scheduled Youth Club meetings for the 2011 track and field and cross country season. The meeting is scheduled for Saturday, February 19th from 10 am to 2 pm at James Logan High School. We will critique our 2010 cross country season and maintain thoughts and ideas for the 2011 season.

The Youth Committee met October 2005 and as part of our effort to improve our operating protocols and streamline our business processes, the committee developed four core areas of concentration that would continually cause the committee to be goal driven.

Our core areas of concentration are:

  • 1. the Youth Committee would become more visible at the Executive Board and the National level
  • 2. develop programs that would extend into the community and promote the sport of track and field through program development
  • 3. annually increase youth participation by 5 percent
  • 4. continually groom leadership

The core areas of concentration were separated into Four Independent Phases. Calendar Year 2011 places us in Phase II of our strategic plan which requires the committee to increase the number of youth representatives at the executive board level by seeking out individuals who will attend executive meetings and vote on youth agenda items that impact the Youth Sport Committee.

We will embark upon creating scholarships for PA Youth Athletes aspirating to attending college, create the criteria and award that would recognize outstanding youth coaches within our association, create a youth service award that would recognize volunteers with our association, develop financial instruments that encourage consistency in profit and expense tracking and allows the committee to annually distribute the youth budget creating financial transparency.

Your involvement is paramount to the success of our organization achieving the goals set before us this year. It is my hope that you are planning to attend the meeting on February 19, 2011 at James Logan High School at 10:00 am.

If you plan to bid for a cross country meet this upcoming season please be aware that you will be expected to have available, the facility location, medical person
