Gotcher, De Reuck win USA 20 km titles

NEW HAVEN – Bret Gotcher (Flagstaff, Ariz.), was top man in a three-way battle for the men’s title Monday at the USA 20 km Championships in New Haven, Conn., as Colleen De Reuck (Boulder, Colo.), took control before halfway to win the women’s crown. Gotcher was timed in 58:57, while De Reuck ran1:07:21.  At 45, De Reuck is the oldest woman to win a major U.S. championship.

Defending champion James Carney (Boulder, Colo.) led the early stages of the race, taking a pack of 12 men through the first mile in 4:34.  By three miles, the lead pack was reduced to four men with Carney still in control and Gotcher, Mohamed Trafeh (Flagstaff, Ariz.), and Jason Lehmkuhle (Minneapolis, Minn.) following closely.

At five miles, Carney was still in command of the pace with Gotcher falling off the pack. As the leaders approached six miles, Gotcher rejoined the group and at 10 km Trafeh made a move that would drop Carney from the lead pack, making it a three man race for the title.

From seven miles on, Gotcher, Trafeh and Lehmkuhle would each take turns at the lead with Trafeh surging to the front to open small gaps on occasion.  Just past nine miles, the three remained within a stride of each other as Trafeh and Lehmkuhle seemed to be well within their comfort zone.

At 12 miles however, it was Gotcher who surged to the lead, dropping Lehmkuhle as Trafeh held on.  Entering the final 100 meters, Gotcher had one more gear and pulled away for a four-second win.

Lehmkuhle held on for third in 59:04 as Andrew Carlson (Flagstaff, Ariz.) and Scott Bauhs (Danville, Calif.) rounded out the top-five in 59:26 and 59:46 respectively.

In the women’s race, 2008 Olympic Marathoner Magdalena Lewy Boulet (Oakland, Calif.), took an early lead, passing the first mile four seconds ahead of the women’s field in 5:18.  By three miles she had a 12 second lead when Serena Burla (Baldwin, Mo.) began to press the pace of the chase pack, bringing De Reuck with her.

By five miles De Reuck had dropped Burla and overtook Boulet to cruise to a 17 second win, earning her second USA 20 km title.  Burla was timed in 1:07:38 with Boulet taking third in 1:08:11.  Rebecca Donaghue (State College, Pa.) and Amy Hastings (Mammoth Lakes, Calif.) finished fourth and fifth in 1:08:39 and 1:08:58 respectively.

2009 Pacific Association Youth Cross Country Schedule & Results

Posted by on Aug 22, 2009 in legacy, XC, Youth | Comments Off on 2009 Pacific Association Youth Cross Country Schedule & Results

Welcome to the 2009 Pacific Association Youth Cross Country Season

From Bob Shor, PA Youth Cross Country Chairman

This year the National Junior Olympics Cross Country Championships will be in Reno on Saturday, December 12th.  Because our Pacific Association will be the host association of the event there will be some changes in our normal Junior Olympic procedures.  The main change is that we will have only one qualifying meet for the Nationals and that qualifying meet is only for our Pacific Association athletes.  Starting with that qualifying meet we will be recognized as Region 16.  The Region 16 qualifying meet will be on Sunday, November 29th, in Reno on the same National JO Championships will take place.  That qualifying meet will be the day after the California High School State Championships (CIF).

Our clubs, working together, will be hosting the Region 16 Championships.  Details and duties will be assigned as the season goes on.

We will be hosting eight (8) meets, between October 4th and November 22nd before the Region 16 Junior Olympic.  We will have a scoring system at those meets for boys and girls in the Bantam, Midget and Youth age groups.  At each meet, if you come in 1st in your age group you will receive 10 points, 2nd =9, 3rd =8, etc. At our November 29th Region 16 Championships the athletes who have scored the most points in the six age group will be presented with a trophy and a whole lot of recognition.  The athletes who have scored the 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 5th most points will receive a letter of accomplishment and recognition.

We would like to have as many of our athletes and clubs take part in all of our meets.  It supports the clubs that host the meets and it makes our athletes better in competition.  The more the athletes, the better the competition.  And the better the competition, the better the athletes will be.

Not all of our Pacific Association Youth Clubs are involved in cross country.  If your club is not involved in cross country give it a try!  The coaching is a lot easier than track and field as there is only one event!  Or, if your club is not involved in cross country, your athletes may legally take part in cross country with another club.

INDIANAPOLIS –  Erik Skaden (Folsom, Calif.) returns to the  USA 100 Mile Trail Championships in an attempt to win outright the title that he shared last year with Mike Wolfe (Missoula, Mont.).  This year’s championships will once again be hosted by the 2009 Tahoe Rim Trail Endurance Runs on July 18th and 19th in beautiful Lake Tahoe, Nevada.

Skaden will face a 100-mile field that includes both experienced ultra marathoners and newcomers including men’s competitors Jamie Dial (Franklin, Tenn.), Jon Olsen (Modesto, Calif.), and Ian Torence (Ashland, Ore.). The women’s field appears to be wide-open where a first-time national champion will be crowned.

This year’s overall men’s and women’s winners of the USA 100-mile Championships will receive $1,000 each.  The top ten men and women USATF athletes will receive overall medals.  Additionally, the top three finishers in each five-year age division starting at 40 years of age will also receive medals.

Demus  is now third on the all-time U.S. list, trailing only Kim Batten  (52.61) and Tonja Buford-Bailey (52.62) from their respective gold  and silver medal winning performances at the 1995 World Outdoor  Championships in Gothenburg, Sweden.

PA’s Vessey wins,  betters World Champs “A” standard

Former Cal Poly  SLO standout Maggie Vessey had the performance of her life in winning the women’s 800 meters convincingly in the fastest time in the world this year of 1 minute 57.84 seconds. Her performance is  a new personal best by more than two seconds, and it placed her on  the Team USA roster for the 2009 World Outdoor Championships in  Berlin by easily bettering the ‘A’ qualifying standard of 2:00.00.  Vessey’s time is the fastest by an American since Jearl  Miles-Clark topped the U.S. list in 2004 with her clocking of  1:57.27. 2009 European Indoor champion Mariya Savinova of Russia  was the runner-up in  1:58.39.

Additional notes courtesy of Fred Baer / Vessey has second fastest American time of the century:

Vessey is a 2001 Soquel High School grad and currently resides in Soquel.

Her time, the second fastest by an American runner this century, is also an all-time Pacific Association (Northern California/Northern Nevada) best.

Previous top PA mark was 1:57.97 by two-time Olympian Nicole Teeter of the Farm Team (and Cottonwood, Calif.).

Vessey also ranks second in the Pacific Association 2009 Grand Prix track and field standings, behind Olympic discus gold medalist Stephanie Brown Trafton of Galt. Both athletes are former Cal Poly teammates (and Big West Conference champions) — and also current Pacific Association champions.
