NAPA, Calif. – March 1, 2009 – Peter Gilmore, 31, of San Mateo, Calif.

and Mary Coordt, 39, of Elk Grove, Calif. took home victories at today’s

31st Annual Kaiser Permanente Napa Valley Marathon (NVM). Both runners

registered clear-cut wins, well ahead of their competition. Gilmore’s

winning time was 2 hours, 23 minutes, and 5 seconds, the second fastest

men’s time at this race in the past 15 years. Coordt topped all women

with a finishing time of 2:48:54 and claimed her third victory at NVM.

She also won here in 1997 and 2005.

Despite rainy, but otherwise temperate conditions, a remarkable 1,822

runners out of 1,895 starters finished the 26.2-mile race that runs the

length of the beautiful Napa Valley. It was the all-time highest

finisher count for the race for the second year in a row. The event is

limited to 2,300 registrants, which is largely determined by the number

of available hotel rooms in the world-renowned Napa Valley wine

producing and tasting region.

Gilmore is a world-class runner who owns a swift personal best in the

marathon of 2:12:45, but this year’s NVM marks his first marathon

victory ever. Andy Martin, 34, of Bend, Ore. led the men’s race for

almost 16 miles, as Gilmore followed, but he could not match Gilmore’s

strong second half of the race over the rolling, point-to-point course.

“It took me a while for my body to loosen up because I didn’t get a

chance to warm up at all before the race,” Gilmore said. “My goal for

this race was to run a good training run, to go out at 5:30 or 5:40 (per

mile) pace and then speed up. That’s just what I did. I ran miles 21

through 25 pretty hard, which was part of the plan.”

Gilmore is preparing for a competitive, prize money marathon this coming

spring, but he hasn’t finalized plans for a specific race yet. He

finished 8th at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials, but an untimely

chest cold forced him to drop out of the 2008 Trials race midway,

thwarting his Olympic aspirations.

“It turned out about how I expected,” said Martin who won three

marathons last year, but whose 2:20:04 personal record is almost eight

minutes slower than Gilmore’s. “Peter ran a strong race. I tried to keep

the pace honest for as long as I could.”

Martin finished second in 2:27:23, over four minutes behind the winner.

Former University of California-Berkeley All American James Nielsen, 29,

of Palo Alto, Calif. was third in 2:31:45.

Coordt equally dominated the women’s race following a strong fourth

place finish at last year’s NVM in which she ran a time of 2:46:30, a

personal record that qualified Coordt for her third U.S. Women’s Olympic

Marathon Trials. This year, Coordt took the lead from the starting gun

and never relinquished it. Her nearest rivals were Jenni Johnson, 29, of

Tustin, Calif. who finished second in 2:56:08 and third placer Monica

Ochs, 39, of Anacortes, Wash. in 3:03:46.

“I ran with some men for as long as I could, but I was alone from 18

miles to the finish,” said Coordt, who will turn 40 in June. “The

weather actually wasn’t that bad, but I didn’t feel perfect. Yet I’m

very happy to get my third win here.”

Christine Iwahashi (West Sacramento, Calif.) is the only other three-

time women’s winner (’86, ’87, ’90) of NVM.

“I think Mary (Coordt) is awesome,” said Iwahashi, 53, who is Coordt’s

teammate on the Sacramento-based Buffalo Chips running club. “This is a

very special race for both of us. It’s neat to see Mary’s consistency

here, and in running in general.”

Iwahashi topped the women’s 50-54 division at this year’s race in 3:41:33.

Each overall winner (Gilmore and Coordt) took home titles as 2009 Road

Runners Club of America (RRCA) national marathon champions. The event

served as RRCA’s National Marathon Championship event. Both winners won

five cases of premium wine donated by the Napa Valley Silverado Trail

Wineries Association. Each winner also carried home a specially

produced, etched bottle of Napa Valley wine.

Johannes Rudolph, 43, of Boulder, Colo. finished fourth overall in

2:33:41 and captured the men’s masters (40 years of age and older)

victory. Cinthya Vielma, 42, of San Jose, Calif. won the women’s masters

title in 3:06:15.

Although Major Tim Burgess, 37, a soldier based in Kuwait, couldn’t be

on this year’s starting line, he ran the Napa Valley Marathon “remotely”

on his U.S. Army base at Camp Virginia this morning. Burgess, who lives

in Healdsburg, Calif. was accompanied by another soldier, Captain Sam

Kang, for 15 miles. He ran the remainder of the 26.2-mile distance alone

except for two supporting Medics. Burgess finished his solo jaunt in

4:26:15, and he will be placed in the official NVM results.

“I felt great for the first 11 miles before I felt any soreness,”

Burgess reported via e-mail. “Then, just after mile 17, I started to

slow. After mile 21 I kind of shuffled along. The last two miles were

pretty tough. But I’m proud that my finishing time is almost five

minutes faster than what I ran last year at the Napa Valley Marathon.”

Burgess is the first “remote” overseas participant to finish NVM.

“We’re very proud of the accomplishments of all of this year’s Napa

Valley Marathon finishers, including Major Burgess’ valiant run,” said

Co-Race Director Rich Benyo. “Finishing a marathon is a unique personal

achievement, and we salute these runners’ commitments.”

Full race results for the Kaiser Permanente Napa Valley Marathon, plus a

personal commentary and photos of Major Burgess’ remote NVM, are

available on the event’s web site at www.napavalleymarathon.org.

All proceeds from the Napa Valley Marathon (a non-profit organization)

are donated to local charities in the Napa Valley.

USATF Youth & YouthRunner Perfect Together

USATF Youth & Youth Runner Perfect Together

USATF Youth Division has launched a new Internet home with  youthrunner.com.

The Youth Division and Youth Runner Magazine have teamed up together to create a spot for coaches and athletes to submit team stories and get the recognition they deserve. It is also designed to be a central hub to find out about the latest news, photos, videos, results, and event information. Athletes can get a profile, enter their best times, and find out about other teams around the country. “This is just another great source our New Youth Division will be working with to make our Youth Program the Best in the country,”USATF National Youth Division Chair. said Lionel Leach” You can check out the get features at http://youth-usatf.youthrunner.com

But wait, there’s more…

Your teams can use Youth Runner Magazine as a fundraiser. In a nutshell it goes like this:

  • * Organize a specific fundraising time period…two weeks, or a finish by date.
  • * Sell subscriptions for $19.95 per year.
  • * You collect and remit one half of the money back to us

Example:

  • * Sell 100 subscriptions – Keep $1000
  • * Sell 1000 subscriptions – Keep $10,000
    …you get it

To make it interesting once you sell 1000 subscriptions we will create a special Sacramento Edition of Youth Runner Magazine. What that means to you is:

  • * On the front Cover we’ll name it the USATF Sacramento Edition and then insert 8 pages just about your meet.
  • * Inside we’ll add at least 8 pages just for you with highlights of your meets and interviews (from YR) with your kids.
  • * You can also use Youth Runner as a marketing tool to reach out for new members and introduce new kids to track and cross country.
  • * Plus you can offer advertising in Youth Runner as part of your existing event sponsorship packages.

What we’re finding out there is that a lot of events have been getting dollars from car dealers and other businesses that just don’t have the money anymore.  And…those that are kicking in want some value.  What adding YR to the mix does is that it takes it out of a one shot advertising deal.  With YR the message goes on in print and online.

We’ll create a separate Sacramento Channel at YouthRunner.com.  Again you can see what we’ve already done at http://youth-usatf.youthrunner.com

IF you can only sell 500 subscriptions we’ll do all of the above excepting that the Sacramento edition would be in a digital formal vs. print…until you can reach the 1000 threshold.
l would love to help to promote the USATF Pacific Assoc. JO Championships or any other events you are involved in. I look forward to working with you.

Best,

Pam Kesterson

KAISER PERMANENTE NAPA VALLEY MARATHON ANNOUNCES ELITE

Posted by on Feb 22, 2009 in legacy, Road Racing | Comments Off on KAISER PERMANENTE NAPA VALLEY MARATHON ANNOUNCES ELITE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact:
Mark Winitz
Win-It!z Sports Public Relations
Tel: (650) 948-0618

NAPA, Calif. – February 21, 2009 – The Kaiser Permanente Napa Valley
Marathon announced today that elite U.S. marathoner Peter Gilmore (San
Mateo, Calif.) and 2007 NVM women’s champion Devon Crosby-Helms (Seattle,
Wash.) will join a sold-out crowd of 2,300 participants for the 31st
annual race on Sunday, March 1, 2009. Although the race does not offer
prize money, its fast and scenic course that spans the length of the
world renowned Napa Valley wine country draws runners of all abilities
from near and far.

* TOP MEN *
Gilmore, 31, owns an impressive personal record at the marathon distance
of 2 hours, 12 minutes, and 45 seconds, earned at the 2006 Boston
Marathon where he placed seventh. He is a veteran of two U.S. Men’s
Olympic Marathon Trials (2004 and 2008). At the 2008 Trials in New York
City, Gilmore was a top contender for a spot on the U.S. Olympic team
headed to Beijing. He fought an untimely chest cold, however, forcing him
to drop out of the race and deal with the biggest disappointment of his
life. A foot injury dampened much of Gilmore’s 2008 racing year, but now
the athlete who is sponsored by MarathonGuide.com says he is rounding
into top form.

A racing-sharp Gilmore could threaten the longtime Napa Valley Marathon
men’s course record of 2:16:20 set by Dick Beardsley in 1987. Gilmore,
however, has other plans.

“I’ll run Napa as a training run,” said Gilmore, who is preparing for a
spring marathon but hasn’t finalized which one yet. “I’ve never done a
marathon as a training run leading up to another marathon. But Napa is a
beautiful race. It’s easy for me to travel to, and the expected winning
time is right in the wheelhouse of what I want to do for a training run.
Mid 2:20s would be nice.”

The average men’s winning time at Napa over the past five years is 2:27.

“Obviously, winning (at Napa) is a top priority, but I have to put a
limit on what I’m willing to do to conserve a little bit for another
marathon,” commented Gilmore, who has logged 100 to 150 training miles a
week over the winter.

Additional top contenders among men include:

— Andy Martin (Bend, Ore.), 34, a prolific marathoner and former
triathlete who won 26.2-milers at the Big Sur International Marathon
(Carmel, Calif.) and Cincinnati (Ohio) Flying Pig Marathon on
back-to-back weekends last year. His personal best is 2:20:04.

— James Nielsen (Palo Alto, Calif.), a two-time NCAA Division III
5,000-meter champion while at the University of California-San Diego, and
a two-time USA world cross country team member. Nielsen, 29, recorded a
personal best of 2:21:01 while winning the 2007 Eugene (Ore.) Marathon.

Male Age Group Watch: Ed Spinney, 55, of Eugene, Ore., who in the late
1970’s and early 1980’s sported an impressive range of 3:57 for the mile
to 2:18 in the marathon. Spinney ran a 2:47 marathon last year, and he
hopes to break the NVM course record of 2:43:29 for age 55 to 59 men at
this year’s race.

* TOP WOMEN *
Devon Crosby-Helms, 26, returns to the Napa Valley Marathon with a
2:49:51 marathon personal best on her resume, a nice improvement on her
2:52:49 runaway victory at the ’07 NVM. Since then, she has also
bolstered her credentials as one of the top U.S. women at ultramarathon
distances. The numerous ultras she has won include the ’07 Tahoe Rim 50
Mile in a course record time (8:39:30) and the ’08 Vermont 100 Mile.

Crosby-Helms competed on officially sanctioned (by USA Track & Field)
U.S. national teams at the last two IAU World Cup 100K races, an
international event which is often referred to as the “world
championship” of ultra-distance running. Last November, in Italy, she
placed tenth overall in the race. Along with U.S. teammate Kami Semick,
who placed second overall, Crosby-Helms helped pace the U.S. team to a
silver-medal-winning performance.

In fact, Semick, 42, of Bend, Ore. is also a top prospect for the women’s
victory at this year’s Napa Valley Marathon. She was the U.S. 50K trail
champion in 2006, and has won marathons at Portland (’08), Silicon Valley
(’07), and Seattle (’05). Semick’s personal best at the marathon distance
is 2:45:24.

“If Kami is in top form, there’s no hope for me,” admitted Crosby-Helms,
who recently had her training interrupted by a foot injury. “I really
don’t know what my speed is going to be like. While winning is always
fun, I just love the Napa race so much. It’s more about just running the
race and enjoying it.”

Mary Coordt (Elk Grove, Calif.) will compete in the race once again after
a memorable performance last year. Coordt, 39, finished the 2008 race in
fourth place behind women’s winner Maureen Ackerly. Her time of 2:46:30,
a personal record, qualified Coordt for her third U.S. Women’s Olympic
Marathon Trials. In fact, the top four women all qualified for the Trials
with times under the Trials “B” qualifying standard of 2:47:00. Coordt is
a two-time champion (’97, ’05) at the NVM.

Female Age Group Watch: Christine Iwahashi, 53, of Sacramento, Calif. is
a three-time winner (’86, ’87, ’90) of the Napa Valley Marathon — tying
her with David Chairez (’84, ’86, ’89) for the most NVM victories.
Iwahashi will run the 112th marathon of her long career at this year’s
NVM.

The 2009 Napa Valley Marathon starts on Sunday, March 1 at 7:00 a.m.
sharp in Calistoga on the Silverado Trail near the intersection of
Rosedale Road. The marathon’s fast, USA Track & Field certified (for
accurate distance) road course runs the length of the beautiful Silverado
Trail and finishes at Vintage High School in Napa. Top runners are
expected to reach the finish between 9:15 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. Runners will
receive official times up until 1:00 p.m. when the course closes.

Entry slots are still available for the companion Kiwanis 5K Fun Run,
which starts (8 a.m.) and finishes at Vintage High School on marathon
morning.

2008 USATF Youth Race Walk Honor Roll
The USA Track & Field Race Walk committee annually honors the top young
race walkers in America. The following athletes were judged the best in
each of their age groups by a panel of elite athletes and coaches at the
USATF National Convention in Reno. The criteria used to evaluate their
performances was the athletes times and places in major competitions,
including the USATF Junior Olympic T&F Nationals, USATF Youth Athletics
T&F Nationals, USATF T&F Junior Nationals, USA World RW Cup Trials and
the events of the USATF Race Walk Junior Grand Prix Circuit.

The committee elected to select 4 athletes in two divisions this year
because of the inseparable accomplishments of the athletes involved. In
the Bantam girls division Erin Jacob’s 3rd place finish in 9:14.83 at
the USATF Junior Olympic nationals wasn’t a significant advantage over
Cherylen Chavez’s 9:14.98, to warrant either being left off the honor
role. And in the Intermediate division the voting ended in a tie for the
third position.

As we have done in the past, all athletes recognized will receive a
Certificate, RW patch, and a T-shirt from the Race Walk committee
commemorating and congratulating them on their achievements.

A big thanks to RW Committee Secretary Ginger Mulanax and Maryanne
Daniel, chair of the Women’s Development, for all of the work they did
in making this happen.

USATF News & Notes, Volume 9, Number 4
Jordan Hasay chooses Oregon

Five-time USA Track and Field national champion Jordan Hasay, who wowed the crowd at Historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., during the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials, has signed a national letter of intent to compete for the University of Oregon.

The 2008-09 Gatorade National Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year, Hasay, who runs for Mission College Preparatory Catholic High School in San Luis Obispo, Calif., was an instant hit with the appreciative audience at Hayward Field on July 4 when she set the national high school record in the semifinals of the 1,500 meters at the Olympic Trials by finishing in 4 minutes 14.50 seconds. Two weeks prior to the Trials, she won the 1,500 meters at the USA Junior Track & Field Championships in Columbus, Ohio. That qualified her for the World Junior Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland, where she placed fourth in a race that came just one week after her 10th place finish in the 1,500m finals at the Olympic Trials.

In December, she capped a remarkable high school cross country career by becoming just the sixth two-time winner of the Foot Locker National Girls Cross Country Championships. Hasay was also the 2005 victor. Prior to her win in San Diego, she became the first person to win four consecutive CIF state cross country championships, winning the 2008 title in an all-division leading time of 17:18. She is also the only winner of four straight Foot Locker West Regional titles.

“Jordan Hasay is one of the most exciting young athletes in the sport of track and field,” said Associate Athletic Director Vin Lananna. “Her electrifying performances at the U.S. Olympic Trials this summer mesmerized Track Town, USA. Coach Maurica Powell and I really connected with Jordan early in the process and developed a strong bond with Jordan, her parents and her coach.

Hasay’s impressive list of awards compiled during the past 12 months includes Track & Field News’ Girls High School Athlete of the Year, USA Track and Field’s Youth Athlete of the Year, USA Today’s High School Track and Field Girls Athlete of the Year and DyeStat Girls Athlete of the Year.

Earning national honors from Gatorade made Hasay a finalist for the Gatorade Female High School Athlete of the Year Award, which will be announced at the ESPY Awards in July. She is also a two-time Gatorade California Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year and won the 2007 and 2008 USA Cross Country Junior Championships.

Educating our Youth

As you know, at the 2007 USATF Annual Convention, the Youth Committee voted to heighten anti-doping education initiatives at its three youth national championships in 2008 and begin in-competition drug testing at the 2009 championship events. The programs are in partnership with the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency and are tied to USATF’s Zero Tolerance anti-doping initiative and Win with Integrity youth outreach program.

While we are working on putting the finishing touches to this new program for the upcoming year, the USADA has developed a website to educate youth about the use of drugs. While you will be receiving more information in the coming weeks, a quick view of the Cheating Your Health Web site will give you an idea of how serious “Cheating Your Health” may be. USATF & our Zero Tolerance Committee are serious and committed when we say that, “cheating is wrong and cheaters will be caught.” Our goal is very simple and clear on our youth level. Since our program is the foundation of Track & Field, then it is our job to do everything possible to educate and prepare our youth to compete on the elite level, including educating them on the use of drugs.

Norrie Richardson, USATF Youth Legal counsel and the National Office will be working very hard to prepare our kids and our program for the task ahead.
